Climbing Jacob's Ladder
- Teaching and Counseling Orthodox Students

by Henry Roth, Ph.D.,
Forward by Rabbi Abraham Twerski

Climbing Jacob's Ladder describes the way we understand Orthodox students who are referred to a therapeutic day school for school-related problems through the lens of religion. The book supports the view that underlying conflicted religious feelings have been underestimated as a significant concurrent problem in this specialized population.

School problems are universal. Orthodox students with emotional and behavioral problems who are referred to a therapeutic day school, regardless of their school difficullties, frequently experience undetected conflicted feelings about their religion. This book provides psycho-educational profiles of Orthodox students with behavior and emotional problems. Moreover, the book shows how conflicted religious feelings may cause or aggravate psychological problems that lead to unhealthy and inappropriate school behavior.

A spectrum of students' conflicted feelings about their religion is classified into five levels as a guide to selecting multiple counseling intervention. This book discusses how to identify Orthodox students who have school-related difficulties in addition to conflicted religious feelings; how those underlying conflicts affect their performance in school; and how to work with and assess these students and their parents in a school setting.
