Shabbat Kiddush

Many modern counselors advise us to take one day a week and disconnect the computers, beepers, cell phones, and electronic entertainments, and focus on family and community. It is as if the secular world is discovering for the first time the ancient wisdom of the Torah. The cessation of work is a gift, rather than a limitation, granting us a little vacation every week. The observance of the Sabbath is marked by what we refrain from doing, rather than any visible object or action. Yet in the Kiddush blessing over the wine on Friday night, we quote these verses from Exodus that tell us that Shabbat, which begins at sunset, is an eternal sign of the covenant between God and Israel. It is not a physical object, but rather a set of behaviors that lock us into a permanent relationship of service to Him, and that is what makes it an eternal marker of the seventh day, when God Himself rested from creative endeavors. It has been said that more than Israel keeps the Sabbath, the Sabbath has kept Israel.

The Children of Israel shall
OBSERVE THE SHABBAT
to make the Shabbat an
ETERNAL COVENANT
for their generations.
Between Me and the
Children of Israel it is
A SIGN FOREVER: that in six days
God made the heaven and the earth,
and on THE SEVENTH DAY
He ceased from work and rested.

     - Exodus 31:16-17
