The Mourner's Kaddish

What can we say in the face of the ultimate tragedy - the loss of someone dear to us? On the one hand, we are utterly bereft and know that we can never replace a parent, sibling, or child. On the other hand, we are grateful for the blessing of having had that person in our lives for as long as we did. The Jewish tradition is to recite this Aramaic poem, written in the everyday language of the common person in Talmudic times. Exactly thirteen synonyms for the verb "to extol" are used, all of them in the future tense. In the ancient system of Hebrew numerology, Gematria, thirteen is the sum of the letters that spell the word "one," which represents The One, God Himself. The mourner is required to recite this prayer in the presence of a minyan (quorum of 10), which keeps the grief-stricken individual from self-imposed isolation. In this formulaic recitation we express our solid faith that we will eventually be reunited with our dear ones in the end of days.

The parenthetical line is not recited in the Ashkenazic liturgy.

The Mourner's Kaddish

Magnified and sanctified be His Great Name in the world created according to His will.

May His Kingdom reign (may He cause His redemption to grow and He hasten the coming of His Messiah) in your lifetime and in your days, and in the lifetime of the entire House of Israel, speedily and very soon.
And let us say, Amen!

May His great Name be blessed for ever and for all eternity.

Blessed, praised, glorified, exalted, extolled, honored, upraised, and lauded be the Name of the Holy One, Blessed is He. Amen!

Above all the blessings, songs, praises, and words of consolation that may be uttered in the world.
And let us say, Amen!

May there be abundant peace from Heaven, and life's goodness for us and for all Israel.
And let us say, Amen!

He who makes peace in His high places, may He, in His compassion, make peace for us and for His entire nation, Israel.
And let us say, Amen!
