Holy Tablets

This piece expresses a respectful attitude towards aging and the aged, who may be experiencing a diminishing of their abilities. Unlike many other cultures, in Jewish tradition they lose none of their worth or their intrinsic human value. When Moses descended from Mount Sinai with the first set of stone tablets only to see the Israelites worshipping the Golden Calf he dropped them to the ground, where they shattered upon impact. Having been carved by the finger of God Himself, the fragments were carefully gathered and stored in the Holy Ark, and the second set of tablets placed with them. Similarly, human beings are also created by God Himself, and we, too, have an intrinsic holiness that is not dependent on our apparent value to society. The Hebrew word for the Ark is "aron" which is also the word for a coffin. When our sojourn on this earth ends, we, too, are placed in an "aron" and are placed in sacred ground.

The text, in Hebrew and English, is taken from the Babylonian Talmud, Tractate Berachot (Blessings), 8b.

"Be gentle with the Elder who has involuntarily forgotten his Torah learning for we say that the second set of Holy Tablets and the broken pieces of the first Holy Tablets both rest together in the Ark."
     - Berachot (Blessings) 8b
