Hamsa Art

The term "hamsa" relates to both the Hebrew and Arabic words for "five". It is a representation of a hand, symbolizing the protective hand of the Creator, as well as reminding us of the five books of Moses in the Torah.

The Hamsa is derived from Kabbalah, and is said to offer protection from Ayin HaRa (the Evil Eye) as well as to bring health, happiness, prosperity and positive energy. Its shape reminds us of the outspread fingers of the Kohanim (priests) as they bless the people.

The colors of blue and red are used to ward off evil, and there is frequently a red or blue beaded eye in the center of a Hamsa to stand for the watchful eye of the Creator. This amulet or pendant is a symbol that is common to both Arab and Jewish cultures.
