Ecclesiastes 3 - For Everything There Is A Season

     The book of Kohelet (Ecclesiastes) was written by King Solomon in his later years as a record of the wisdom he acquired in life. It is traditionally read on the Shabbat that falls in the middle of the Sukkot holiday in the fall, representing a harvest of ideas corresponding to the agricultural harvest. We acknowledge that we have done what we could to produce the fruits of our labors, but the full tally is ultimately in God's hands. These particular verses were also made famous in a popular song several decades ago, and have become an active part of the modern cultural mosaic.

For Everything There Is A Season

A time for every experience under heaven.
A time to be born and a time to die,
A time to plant and a time to uproot what is planted;
A time to tear down and a time to build up;
A time to weep and a time to laugh,
A time to grieve and a time to dance;
A time to throw stones and a time to gather stones,
A time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to seek and a time to lose,
A time to keep and a time to discard;
A time to tear and a time to sew,
A time to keep silence and a time to speak.

     - Ecclesiastes 3:1-7
