Blessing - Separating Challah

When we speak of "challah" today, most often we are describing the golden braided loaves used on Shabbat and holidays. However, the term technically refers to the small amount of dough that is separated before the kneaded and braided loaves are baked. In ancient times when the Temple functioned, this amount was the percentage given to the priests in the Temple. Nowadays it is burned in the oven, and disposed of separately from the rest of the household waste. Since the support of the Temple and its functionaries is a positive obligation, we recite this blessing in gratitude for the opportunity to express our adherence to God's laws even in the absence of the Temple itself.

Blessing on Separating Challah

Blessing are You, O Lord, our God,
King of the Universe,
Who has made us holy
by the observance of His mitzvot
and commended us to separate
challah which is set aside.

(Upon setting aside the challah)
Behold, this is challah.
