The Deer or Gazelle - From Perek Shira

The deer possesses a wondrous combination of speed and grace that has inspired poetry and song for centuries. The Mishna quotes the ancient sages advising us to be as swift as the deer to do the will of our Father in Heaven. The timid deer is hunted by man and beast, and so is often used as a metaphor for the Jewish People. The song of the deer is a song of gratitude sung in the light of morning after surviving the darkness, just as the Jewish People will rejoice when the light of redemption ends the long dark night of exile.

There are many names derived from the deer, including Tzvi, Tzvia, Tzivia, Hinda, Hindy, Hersh, Giselle, and Bambi (in Spanish).

The Deer is saying:
"And I shall sing of Your strength, I shall rejoice of Your kindness in the morning, for You were a refuge to me, and a hiding place on the day of my oppression."
     - Psalms 59:17

Perek Shira is the song that is sung every day by God's creations, each creation having its own song. Please see this category's section page for more of an explanation.
