The Rooster - From Perek Shira

This rooster at the Biblical Zoo seemed to actually pose for this photo. Unlike all the others, the song of the rooster is not a quote from scripture, but rather it is adapted from the Zohar, a portion of the Kabbalah. The rooster is nature's proverbial alarm clock, complete with snooze features. He does not first crow at dawn, but begins several hours beforehand, and each of those hours has its own corresponding verse and symbolic significance to help us understand why this creature is trying so hard to get us out of our comfortable beds when it still seems like night to us.

The Rooster is saying,
"When the Holy One, blessed be He, comes to the righteous in the Garden of Eden, all the trees in the Garden scatter their spices, and they rejoice and praise, and then the rooster is also aroused and offers praises."

The first call, at midnight, is acknowledging the Creator.
Quotes from Psalms 24:7-8

The second call, at the beginning of the second hour, rallies us to the awareness of God.
Quotes from Psalms 24:9-10

The third call, at the third hour before dawn, demands that we busy ourselves with Torah.

The fourth call, after replenishing the world's source of life with Torah study, reminds us to be grateful for another day.
Quotes from Genesis 49:18

The fifth call, two hours before dawn, lets us know it is time to arise from bed.
Quotes from Proverbs 6:9

The sixth call, an hour before dawn, warns of the dangers of oversleeping.
Quotes from Proverbs 20:13

The seventh and last call, at dawn, says it is time to go to work.
Quotes from Psalms 119:126

Perek Shira is the song that is sung every day by God's creations, each creation having its own song. Please see this category's section page for more of an explanation.
