Sefer Tehillim is known in English as the Book of Psalms. This book has had the greatest of influences upon the development of the Jewish mind and spirit.
King David wrote most of the Psalms, and in them he expressed every human emotion. It is for this reason that people have turned to this book for emotional support in times of trouble and in thanksgiving in times of joy. Its rich metaphors and unique poetic rhythms have a timeless resonance.
Many of the most familiar prayers are drawn from the pages of Tehillim, and they are said to possess an important key to the Gates of Mercy. Perhaps this is why the custom has developed of gathering a group together to collectively recite the entire 150-chapter book to beseech the Almighty for relief from illness or danger. |
